Since opening day in 2006 Sung Star Academy, has enrolled students from various towns in Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Our facility is spacious, has well planned instructional classrooms, a 1726 square foot gym, a nurse’s suite and a library which offers a plethora of books for our students and their teachers to read. Our building is locked and parents are given an access code to enter the building which also keeps track of student attendance. Our facility has two fenced in playgrounds, as well as, interior and exterior video surveillance to maintain a safe and secure environment for our students and staff.
As a staff we strive to nurture all of the children in our care and guide each child to be happy, confident and independent learners. Our staff is well trained and meets all of the requirements/mandates put forth by the NJ Office of Licensing.

A Message from Dr. and Mrs. Sung:
The words “Kum Sung” have become a household name in Ocean County. We run a family business that has been educating youngsters, children, teens, adults and families successfully for over a third of a century. We feel that a genuine commitment to education is what has contributed to our success and credibility.
The “Kum Sung” philosophy is the Korean philosophy of sincerity and respect. If these qualities are built into a child’s life, they will become part of their personality. Sung Star Academy will educate all children to be successful and strive for their personal best. The curriculum will embellish individual developmental levels and guide children socially, emotionally and academically.

Youngsun Yoon
Executive Director
Sung Star Academy’s Executive Director is Youngsun Yoon. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Management Technology and is a member of the National Association for the Education for Young Children. Prior to joining Sung Star she owned and ran a successful business. Since 2006, Mrs. Yoon has worked toward the growth and development of the business side of Sung Star Academy. She is married to Kum Sung/ Sung Star Karate Master Charhee Yoon. Master Charhee is an actor in the Ninja Turtle Movies and former National Karate Champion, who instructs Sung Stars students in Karate for Physical Education. Mr. and Mrs. Yoon are parents of one child who attended Sung Star Academy and now attends the Before/After Care Program.
Diana MacKenzie
Director of Curriculum and Instruction
Diana V. MacKenzie is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Sung Star Academy. She has over 38 years of experience in public school education in Ocean County, as a Teacher, Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction. She holds two Master of Arts degrees from Georgian Court University in Elementary Education and Public School Administration, with a concentration in Curriculum Development. Her New Jersey certifications include: Elementary Teacher K-8, Reading Specialist K-12, Supervisor, Principal, Superintendent, and Business Administrator. Mrs. MacKenzie is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and lifetime member of the New Jersey PTA.
Meagan Buchansky
School Nurse
Meagan Buchansky has been a Licensed Practical Nurse since 2012 and began working at Sung Star Academy in 2014. Some of her duties include, but are not limited to, assessing injuries, dealing with ill students, fixing “boo-boos”, administering medication to children, allergy issues, maintaining health records on the students, training staff on issues regarding health and safety, teaching health classes at appropriate age level classes and assisting in anything else needed within our school. She is extremely passionate about working with young children and always begins her day with a smile. Ms. Buchansky is the mother of one child who attends our program and has worked with young school aged children for over 10 years
Dr. Arlene Rogo
Board of Directors
Dr. Rogo has lived in Toms River for over 20 years. She has over 35 years of experience as an educator including being a Principal in the Neptune Township School District. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Social Studies, a Master of Arts degree and also a Doctorate in Educational Administration/Supervision
Dr. Hojun Yoo
Board of Directors
Dr. Yoo has been a resident of Toms River for over 15 years. He is a cardiologist in Brick and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area. He received his medical degree from Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School.
Keith Huryk & Laurie Huryk
Board of Directors
Mr. and Mrs. Huryk have been residents of Toms River for over 25 years. He is an IT Director and is also a Karate Master Instructor at the Toms River Recreation Center. Mr. Huryk has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree specializing in Communication Design. Mrs. Huryk has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and is a Registered Nurse. She obtained a Master’s degree in Nursing Informatics
